Advisory for the 24th SEAPAVAA Conference & General Assembly

Note: The 24th SEAPAVAA Conference, 8th – 12th June 2020, Da Nang, Vietnam is cancelled as per the announcement released by the SEAPAVAA Executive Council and the Vietnam Film Institute on 10th March 2020.

24th SEAPAVAA Conference & General Assembly
8th-12th June 2020, Da Nang, Vietnam

This Advisory is jointly issued by the SEAPAVAA Executive Council and the Vietnam Film Institute.

In light of the recent developments on the novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV),  we would like to inform everyone that the SEAPAVAA Executive Council, SEAPAVAA Secretariat together with the Vietnam Film Institute (host institution for the 24th SEAPAVAA Conference & General Assembly), are closely monitoring the situation.

All preparations for the 24th SEAPAVAA Conference & General Assembly are proceeding as normal. At this stage, it is fully expected that the event will proceed as planned.

If you are making advance travel bookings to attend the 24th SEAPAVAA Conference & General Assembly, may we suggest that you take out travel insurance to cover you in the event of a cancelled conference and general assembly because of heightened health risks and travel restrictions. Please check that the provisions of your travel insurance will cover such an eventuality in case it does happen.

Should there be a need to cancel the 24th SEAPAVAA Conference & General Assembly:

  • we will announce the cancellation by early May 2020.
  • we will post the cancellation announcement on SEAPAVAA’s corporate website as well as the conference website.
  • the SEAPAVAA Secretariat will concurrently email the cancellation announcement directly to the SEAPAVAA membership.
  • we will also notify non-SEAPAVAA members who may have registered for the conference by then.
  • we will make a refund in full, of any registration fees, tradeshow booths fees, and cash sponsorships that may have been paid by then, for the event.

24th SEAPAVAA’s Conference, 8 – 12 June 2020, Grand Mercure Da Nang, Vietnam – Introducing the Keynote Speaker, Linda Tadic

Introducing  the Keynote Speaker LINDA TADIC

We are pleased to announce that Linda Tadic will deliver the keynote address  at SEAPAVAA’s 24th  Conference.

Linda Tadic is the Founder/CEO of Digital Bedrock, a managed digital preservation service that helps libraries, archives, museums, producers, studios, artists, and individuals preserve their digital content. She has over 35 years’ of experience in leading preservation, metadata, and digital production operations at organizations such as ARTstor, HBO, and the Media Archives and Peabody Awards Collection at the University of Georgia.

She is currently an adjunct professor in the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) Moving Image Archive Studies programme teaching courses in Digital Asset Management and Media Description and Access. Previously, she was an adjunct professor in the New York University (NYU) Moving Image Archiving and Preservation programme (courses in collection management and cataloguing and metadata).

She consults and lectures on digital asset management, audiovisual and digital preservation, the environmental impact of digital preservation, copyright, and metadata, with clients as diverse as WNET/Thirteen, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, SBS (Australia), Dunhuang Research Academy (China), ESPN, and the Missouri History Museum.

She is co-author of the book Descriptive Metadata for Television: an End-to-End Introduction, and was editor of the revised FIAF Moving Image Cataloguing Manual.  She is a founding member and former President of the Association of Moving Image Archivists (AMIA), and is currently on The National Digital Stewardship Alliance (NDSA) Coordinating Committee.

She has presented on “The Environmental Impact of Digital Preservation” at several international conferences since 2015.

Job Posting: Head (Library & Archive) for National Gallery Singapore

The National Gallery Singapore (NGS) is a leading visual arts institution overseeing the largest public collection of modern art in Singapore and Southeast Asia.  It is located at: 1 St. Andrew’s Road, Singapore 178957

The NGS Resource Centre is a SEAPAVAA Associate Institutional Member.

The NGS is looking for a dynamic, collaborative, and experienced person to lead collection development and management as well as service-related activities, at the its Library & Archive. The key responsibilities and job requirements for this position are as listed below.

The Library & Archive team under the  NGS’s Collections Development department is responsible for developing, preserving, managing, and promoting its collection of materials. The team serves the research needs of both internal and external parties, e.g. Gallery curators, art professionals, researchers, and tertiary and graduate students. The Library & Archive team works closely with Curatorial and Collections colleagues in the acquisition, digitization and conservation matters pertaining to the collections of the Library & Archive.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provides vision and supervises development of the Library & Archive collections, and its outreach to the public
  • Based on research and identified gap areas, leads strategic efforts to analyse and assess collection strengths, needs, priorities and goals in relation to available resources
  • Develops and updates a collection development policy in consultation with curators and colleagues across the Gallery to strategically build the collection
  • Oversees curation of archival displays in the Gallery’s Rotunda Library & Archive and other related venues
  • Manages reader services for Gallery staff and public researchers, as well as staffing the reference desk, to provide the best scholarly and customer service
  • Oversees the development of policies and procedures for physical and digital collection access, preservation and conservation to service the public while safeguarding materials
  • Oversees effective management of the Library & Archive team and stewardship of the budget
  • Continuously evaluates research trends in art history and visual culture of Southeast Asia to ensure the Library & Archive collection stays relevant and contributes to knowledge production
  • Actively promotes the Library & Archive in Southeast Asia and beyond to build awareness and develops strategies to increase use at various platforms
  • Liaises with other departments and external stakeholders such as artists, artist estates, researchers and other art institutions

Job Requirements

  • At least a Masters degree in Art History, Library Sciences or equivalent
  • Minimum 10 years professional experience in a reference library or archive, with preference for candidates from an arts background
  • Willingness to travel in Southeast Asia for the purpose of building and promoting the archive
  • Expertise and working experience in the handling of archival materials would be advantageous
  • Fluency in the Chinese or Malay language or other Southeast Asian languages would be advantageous
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Good writing, communication, administrative skills
  • Other skills: Microsoft Word, Excel

The Winter School for Audiovisual Archiving guest talks are freely available in webinar form. Our three guest speakers will share insights on how their organisations – with a variety of audiovisual materials – deal with digital preservation challenges.

Our guest speakers for this edition are Lucy Wales, Jonáš Svatoš and Marjolein Steeman.

Lucy Wales (British Film Institute, UK)
Lucy Wales is the Digital Preservation and Data Manager at the BFI. She is responsible for managing the Digital Operations team, the BFI Filmography Diversity Researcher and the planning and implementation of data creation and media management workflows for the Heritage 2022 video digitisation and diversity data research projects.

Jonáš Svatoš (Národní filmový archiv, CZ)
Jonáš Svatoš is the Head of Digital Laboratory at the Národní filmový archiv (Czech Republic). This department looks after digital film collections, as well as services related to digitization of film and other media. He is originally a software engineer who focuses mainly on implementing solutions based on open standards and formats into the field of digital preservation.

Marjolein Steeman (Sound and Vision, NL)
Marjolein Steeman is working on various projects in the area of preservation and metadata. She develops and implements preservation plans for new formats and archive services. Marjolein has been working at Sound and Vision for over 10 years. She studied information science at VU University Amsterdam and worked for years as an expert in data analysis and data management.

SEAPAVAA Congratulates Reto Kromer, recipient of JTS Award 2019

The JTS Awards honor individuals, organizations or projects, recognizing significant achievements and contributions to the technology of the audiovisual archiving field.

SEAPAVAA would like to congratulate Reto Kromer for receiving the inaugural JTS award (2019) for his extraordinary contributions to this field.

Reto Kromer is the director of AV Preservation by reto.ch, a SEAPAVAA associate institutional member from 2007 – 2018. His institution supported SEAPAVAA’s first Best Archival Project in the Region Award (2019) which was presented to the Save Myanmar Film during the association’s 23rd Conference in June 2019,  Noumea, New Caledonia.

SEAPAVAA Congratulates Adrian Wood, AMIA’s The Alan Stark Awardee (2019)

The Alan Stark Award honors individuals who have made a significant contribution through their efforts on a special project or in project management that contributes to, and supports, the work of moving image archives and/or the operations of the Association of Moving Image Archivists (AMIA).

SEAPAVAA would like to congratulate Adrian Wood for receiving the Alan Stark Award (2019) from AMIA  for his significant contribution to recover and restore the lost Olympic films.

Adrian Wood is a lifetime member of SEAPAVAA. He served the Executive Council as a  member (2008 – 2011; 2011 – 2014) and as treasurer (2014 – 2017). He was bestowed a  SEAPAVAA Fellow during the association’s 23rd Conference in June 2019,  Noumea, New Caledonia.
