The Twelfth Conference and General Assembly of the South East Asia-Pacific Audio Visual Archive Association (SEAPAVAA) was held in Manila, Philippines on June 23-27, 2008. It was hosted by the Philippine Information Agency in cooperation with the local archiving associations – Society of Filipino Archivists (SFA) and the Society of Filipino Archivists for Film (SOFIA), the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and the Department of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of the Philippines.

The conference theme was “Archiving and Digitization: Dreams and Nightmares”. The conference tackled problems and issues regarding the transition into Digitization and discussed mistakes, lessons and successes of different audiovisual archives in the region and other countries on their taking the “digital plunge”.

The conference was attended by 129 delegates representing the audiovisual archives and archivists from Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Fiji Islands, Germany, Hong Kong (China), Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, Singapore, Switzerland, Thailand, the United Kingdom, the United States of America and Vietnam. The Conference consisted of a symposium, screenings evenings – the annual Archive Gems and the screening of a Philippine classic film “Biyaya ng Lupa,” workshops on digitization and audiovisual preservation, institutional visits to various audiovisual/custodial institutions in the Metro, cultural interaction trip to Villa Escudero in the province of Quezon, and welcome and farewell dinners.
